Chapter Six: Steven

It was pretty late in the evening when Helen finally reappeared and informed me that visiting hours were about over. Marcella and I had spent most of the day making her bed and then sitting on the floor playing with a chess set one of the orderlies had given her. Already, Marcella was showing some unexpected development. Before, she downright stunk at chess and would never play it with me, always mistaking her rooks for knights and her queen for the king, and some such silliness. Now, she not only seemed to show interest for it, she was downright good at it.

Helen knocked on the door frame as Marcella and I were setting up for a third game.

“I'm glad you two are having fun,” she said, “But it's time for lights out, now.”

“Great.” Marcella muttered, “Just when I was getting the hang of it, too.”

“I'll be back tomorrow, fuss-pot.” I told her, “Until then, you can keep practicing.”

She looked up at me and nodded in assent. I helped her put the game away and stood up, moving to the door as she stood, holding the game box in front of her and watching me as I headed out.

“Have a good night.” she called.

“You too,” I said, smiling softly back at her. Framed in the low light from the single lamp on the table by the sofa, she looked positively ethereal and I felt my pulse speeding up exponentially. But I forced it back, allowing Helen to lead me out of the room and, reluctantly, away from Marcella.

“I'm impressed,” Helen remarked, “Except for the rough start there in the beginning, you handled yourself very well.” she said as she led me down the hallway. I kept glancing back at Marcella's closed door, wondering what she was going to do with herself for the rest of the night.

“I'm sorry,” I replied, turning back around, “I couldn't stop myself.”

“I understand. I'm sure I'd be the same way with Bryant if something ever happened to him.” Helen said softly, “So, are you intending to come back tomorrow?”

“Oh, definitely. But I did have a question. When can she come home with me?”

“Not for a few weeks, at least. Not only does she require more daily exams to make sure she's developing normally, she also needs more time to adjust to you. She'll probably be able to go home with you next month, but I don't want to say anything for certain.”

“I guess that makes sense.” I sighed, “I'll try not to push it. I really do want to do this right, you know.”

“I know. And I'm sure we'll be seeing quite a lot of you before her discharge is finally approved.”

I chuckled at that, “Yeah, you're probably right.”

A couple of days went by. I bid Doozle goodbye and took off for the facility, feeling better than I had in weeks. My car was loaded up with decorations and other things for Marcella. She'd given me a list of everything she wanted for her apartment and I was able to find much of it fairly easily, and for a good price.
